Types of Clad Metals

Clad metals can be described as metals that have been bonded with a different type of metal. The main idea behind bonding two types of metals is to get one metal that works better than one type of metal. Usually, metals with desirable characteristics are bonded to form a single alloy. It is important to note this new formed clad metal has better characteristics, such as lower porosity, better formability, and higher resistance to corrosion. The processes that result into these clad metals include bonding, diffusion, rolling, extrusion, and pressing.

Clad metals are classified according to the types of materials used to form them and the bonding process as well. Some of the common types of clad metals are overlay clad and inlay clad. Inlay clad metals are achieved by bonding precious metals like silver, gold, or platinum with cheaper metals like copper, brass, or stainless steel. This process allows the precious metals to be placed where you want.Inlay clad metals are denser, harder, and more resistant to wear. These characteristics are important since they promote optimal bond integrity.

Overlay clad metals are those clad metals that are created by a metallurgical technique, which bonds together different metals under high pressure and heat. It is important to note that overlay clads can be subdivided into a single clad with two layers, double clad with three layers, and overlay clads with seven layers. Of important to know is that overlay clads are customized to fit certain industrial conditions.

Both overlay and inlay clad metals possess different forms. The various forms of clad metals is dictated by factors like clad plate, clad rod, clad tube, clad sheet, and clad wire. The shape or form of each clad metal determines the process of cladding, such as co-rolling, diffusion, casting, heavy electroplating, co-extrusion, and heavy chemical deposition.

There are certain advantages associated with clad metals.
Clad metals enhance the appearance of some metals. Secondly, when using clad metals you will assured of higher resistance to corrosion and wear. Furthermore, clad metals have good electrical and thermal properties. Clad metals have found their way in industrial applications. This is because of the high value they add in these industrial applications. Clad metals are used in specific industrial applications like cryogenic processing, power generation, shipbuilding, aluminum smelting, petroleum refining, and chemical processing among many others.

You must carry out special inspections, which are design to check whether there are any cracks in the weld joints. It is particularly important to carry out these special inspections since clad materials are placed in corrosive environments. Furthermore, quality control measures must be applied during the cladding process so that there are no undercuts, incomplete penetrations, and lack of fusions in the clad metals.
